Breed description: Rottweiler
Ancestors of the Rottweiler accompanied the herds that Romans brought when invading Europe. Germans recognized the controllable herding and guarding instincts in this breed and they were selectively bred for those traits. As the need for those services diminished, Rottweiler’s almost faded into extinction. A club formed in the 1900’s established a breed standard for the Rottweiler and it has not changed since.
The Rottweiler (sometimes called a “Rottie”) is calm, trainable, brave, and very devoted to its owner and family. They are very strong and powerful dogs, and although they are even tempered they need an owner who is strong minded and firm… somebody capable of handling the strength and size of this dog. Strong leadership and proper training are critical for a happy and healthy Rottweiler, otherwise behavior issues may develop and an aggressive Rottweiler can be very dangerous. With that being said, when the pack leadership status is achieved by the owner, a Rottweiler is a very caring and loving pet that can be very warm to children and other pets.
Rottweilers have a smooth and glossy coat that is easy to groom. They are an average shedder. Brush when needed when a firm bristly brush. Only bathe when necessary because over bathing may lead to skin irritation.
The average life expectancy of a Rottweiler is around 10-12 years. They are susceptible to ACL damage, prone to hip dysplasia, and can overeat easily. It’s important to feed this breed 2-3 meals daily rather than one large meal or a bottomless food dish.
